Hair Care Q&A

Your hair questions, answered

The things clients ask us in the chair every week — from wash days and heat damage to colour that fades too fast.

How often should I get a haircut?

Most clients look their best with a trim every 6 to 8 weeks. Short, precise shapes like bobs and fades hold their line for about 4 weeks, while long hair that is growing out can stretch to 10 to 12 weeks with a light dusting of the ends.

How often should I wash my hair?

Two to three times a week suits most hair types. Fine or oily hair may need every other day, while curly, coily or colour-treated hair usually prefers once or twice a week with a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo.

How do I make my colour last longer?

Wash with cool water, use a sulphate-free colour-safe shampoo, apply heat protectant before hot tools, and keep the water temperature down in the shower. A gloss or toner refresh every 6 to 8 weeks keeps tone from fading brassy.

Is balayage better than highlights for me?

Balayage is hand-painted and grows out softly, so it needs fewer appointments — ideal for a lived-in look. Traditional foil highlights give brighter, more uniform lift from the root, which suits anyone who wants maximum brightness or full grey coverage.

What should I do about split ends between appointments?

Split ends cannot be repaired, only removed. Slow them down with a weekly conditioning mask, a silk pillowcase, lower heat settings, and a trim every couple of months.

How can I keep my hair healthy if I use hot tools daily?

Always apply a heat protectant on damp hair, keep irons under 350°F for fine hair and under 400°F for coarse hair, and take at least two heat-free days a week. A bond-building treatment every few weeks helps rebuild strength.

What can I do about dry, frizzy hair in winter?

Frizz is usually dehydration. Swap to a richer conditioner, add a leave-in cream or light oil on the mid-lengths and ends, avoid over-washing, and finish with a cool shot from the dryer to seal the cuticle.

I'm losing more hair than usual — is that normal?

Shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal, and seasonal shedding or post-illness shedding is common. If you notice widening parts, thinning patches or a sudden increase over several months, it's worth speaking to a doctor or dermatologist alongside gentler styling.

How long does keratin smoothing last?

Usually 3 to 5 months, depending on hair texture and how often you wash. Use a sulphate-free shampoo and avoid tight ponytails for the first few days to get the full lifespan.

Should I wash my hair before a colour appointment?

Come with day-old hair — clean but not freshly washed. Natural scalp oils protect during colouring. Do skip heavy oils, dry shampoo build-up and thick styling products.

Can you fix colour done somewhere else?

Yes. Colour corrections are common, and we handle banding, brassiness and uneven box-dye results. Call ahead so we can book the extra time the correction needs — a photo of your current hair helps.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

A couple of inspiration photos, and an honest history of what your hair has had done in the past year — box colour, bleach, keratin or relaxers all change what is safely possible in one visit.

Everyday Care

Four habits that change your hair

Wash cool, condition warm

Hot water swells the cuticle and strips colour. Shampoo the scalp, condition the ends, and rinse cool.

Protect before heat

A heat protectant is not optional if you blow-dry or iron. It is the single cheapest way to keep ends intact.

Sleep on silk

Silk or satin pillowcases cut friction, which means less frizz, fewer tangles and fewer broken hairs.

Trim on a schedule

Regular small trims keep length looking thicker than rare big cuts to repair damage.
